Vintage Navajo Pawn Jacla with Mediterranean Coral & Orange Spiny Oyster | Two-Strand | Circa 1930s–1940s
This authentic vintage Navajo pawn jacla is a traditional Southwestern adornment, historically worn with the strands hanging vertically down the front of the chest. Jaclas were created for personal wear, ceremonial use, and as pawn items at trading posts, making them an important and recognizable form in early Southwestern jewelry.
This example features two strands of natural Mediterranean coral nuggets, accented with orange spiny oyster shell, adding warmth, contrast, and texture to the design. The coral and spiny oyster show natural variation in color and surface, consistent with early hand-strung construction. The strands are finished with sterling silver wire-wrapped cones and clasp, exhibiting a soft, original patina developed through age and wear. Unsigned, as expected for pawn jewelry of this era.
About the Jacla in the Santo Domingo (Kewa Pueblo) Tradition:
Jaclas hold deep cultural significance among Santo Domingo (Kewa) Pueblo artisans, where they were traditionally worn as vertical strands symbolizing protection, balance, and status. Commonly made from shell, turquoise, coral, and stone, jaclas were worn for ceremonial occasions and daily adornment. This influential Pueblo form was later adopted and adapted by neighboring tribes, including Navajo silversmiths, particularly during the early 20th century.
