Painted Pueblo Necklace
The Painted Pueblo Necklace by Rodney Coriz is a remarkable multi-strand statement piece combining traditional materials with a distinctly contemporary composition. Rich strands of deep blue lapis are interspersed with turquoise, jet, shell, orange spiny oyster, and colorful accents, creating layers of color and texture throughout the necklace.
A dramatic red spiny jacla drops from the center, creating beautiful movement and contrast against the lapis strands. At approximately 24 inches long, the necklace has a substantial presence while showcasing the beadwork and stonework for which Coriz is known.

About the Artist
Rodney Coriz learned jewelry making through his grandfather, Lupe Pena, and his mother, Nestora Coriz, both accomplished jewelers. From childhood, he was exposed to traditional beadwork, shell work, inlay, and metalsmithing, and by age 10 he had begun designing and creating his own jewelry.
Coriz later expanded his metalsmithing skills through classes at the Poeh Cultural Center in 2002. His work blends traditional hand-rolled bead techniques with a contemporary approach to jewelry design. His jewelry has been shown at museums including the Heard Museum and Millicent Rogers Museum, and he is featured in the book Masters of Contemporary Indian Jewelry.
