The overlay technique is commonly used in the creation of Storyteller jewelry. This process consists of placing a layer of silver with a hand cutout design over a solid layer of silver. Storyteller jewelry serves as a prime example of how art can effectively convey cultural aspects beyond the use of written text.

About the Artist: 

Roland Hogan Begay, born southwest of Gallup, New Mexico, on the Navajo reservation, is a master silversmith who learned the craft from his father. Using an overlay technique, he skillfully creates scenes from Navajo life, featuring hogans, people, horses, corrals, and other items set against a background of sterling silver or 14k gold. Roland also crafts stunning jewelry with the Navajo wedding/ceremonial basket design using copper and sterling silver. With multiple awards at prestigious shows, including the Gallup Intertribal Ceremonial and the Heard Museum's annual show in Phoenix, his work is traditional, precise, and a source of pride for us to carry.
